Working with a Diverse Population
This course provides an overview of sociocultural identity, with an emphasis on how identity impacts access and success programs. Issues of sociocultural identity have been shown to impact educational outcomes. As such, it is imperative for access and success professionals to be aware of the dynamic between identity and the student experience. This course will describe various sociocultural identity development models, frameworks for applying cultural competence to practice, and systems of privilege and oppression at the societal, institutional, group, and individual levels. A special focus will be placed on how various sociocultural identities intersect and impact the educational experience of students from low-income, first-generation college going, and other underrepresented backgrounds.
