The role of financial aid in promoting social mobility for low-income, first-generation students cannot be overstated. Research from the Pell Institute reveals that students who receive financial aid are 20% more likely to persist in their education beyond the first year than those who don’t. Additionally, a report by the Education Policy Institute shows that college attendance rates increase by 4% for every $1,000 increase in financial aid. Clearly, understanding the financial aid process is crucial for practitioners in aiding their students as they persist towards degree attainment.

This session will introduce participants to the fundamentals of the financial aid process, helping TRIO professionals to better navigate the system and identify key intervention points. Topics covered will include:

  • Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID) and FAFSA Completion
  • Verification
  • Understanding the Award Letter
  • Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
  • Professional Judgment
